Mosaic Art Lesson

I recently created a unit on creating mosaics. This lesson unit contains history on mosaics, a vocab lesson and quiz, and a brief project outline. This is a project I did with a Crafts & Printmaking class in a high school setting. Most kids were freshman and sophomores. It is a flexible topic that could be made more intricate or simplified to adjust for age and ability.

Mosaics have a long history, beginning in the 8th Century B.C. Mosaics have a strong place in today’s culture as well. It is under the branch of Craft (An artistic expression that doesn’t fall under a specific category or generalization). Mosaics are a non elitist form of art. We see the influence of mosaics in outlets such as flooring and backsplash in housing.

Types of Tesserae (mosaic pieces):

colored marbles
glass pieces
ceramic tiles
pottery fragments
small tiles
stone tiles
